What is Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® is a nonsurgical facial treatment that lifts and tones sagging facial skin using ultrasound technology. This safe cosmetic procedure stimulates the body’s own natural regenerative response to softening the appearance of fine lines on the face and neck, and progressively lift and firm sagging eyebrow, chin, and neck skin.

What is Unique About Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® is the only non-invasive treatment that is FDA-approved to lift loose, sagging skin. This unique skin tightening therapy is also the only cosmetic procedure that utilizes ultrasound imaging, thus allowing clinicians to see and target the layers of skin where ultrasound energy should be deposited for maximum efficacy.

Ultherapy® Décolletage Treatment, a treatment that utilizes the signature Ultherapy® ultrasound imaging capabilities and precise ultrasound therapy technology, is also the first and only noninvasive treatment that’s FDA-approved to explicitly remove lines and wrinkles from the chest.

Can Ultherapy® Replace a Facelift?

While Ultherapy® addresses the effects of aging and gravity deep within the foundational layers of the skin, this treatment is not a duplicate or replacement for a facelift. However, Ultherapy® is a wonderful alternative to a facelift for those people who want to lift and firm the neck and facial skin without an invasive surgical procedure. Ultherapy® may also help patients prolong the results of a facelift and other facial cosmetic procedures.

How Does Ultherapy® Differ From Laser Treatments?

Lasers use light-based energy to address cosmetic imperfections on the skin’s surface. Ultherapy® uses ultrasound technology to bypass the superficial layers of the skin and address cosmetic imperfections in a noninvasive manner at depths that have yet to be matched by other cosmetic devices. Ultrasound therapy stimulates the body’s own collagen production process to lift and support the skin at its foundation, resulting in a gradual lift of the skin’s underlying tissues over the course of three to six months.

Traditional laser therapies use light energy to only treat superficial skin issues because this type of energy cannot reach deeper layers of the skin without causing significant thermal damage to the outermost layers. Furthermore, laser therapies are not approved by the FDA to lift and tighten sagging skin. However, since lasers and ultrasound therapy address separate skin issues, the technologies are quite complementary when used together.

How Long Does an Ultherapy® Treatment Take?

The duration of your Ultherapy® procedure will depend on the size of the treatment area and your individual course of treatment. Treatment of the face and neck takes between 60 to 90 minutes, while treatment of the chest usually takes no more than 30 minutes.

Will I Need to Take Time Off After Ultherapy®?

Since Ultherapy® is a nonsurgical treatment, there is zero downtime involved with the procedure. Most patients return to their normal daily routine immediately after treatment without having any special aftercare.

Does Ultherapy® Treatment Hurt?

Some patients report a mild discomforting sensation as energy is being deposited deep within the skin, but it usually lasts no longer than the actual delivery of the ultrasound energy. You should remember that each patient has his or her own threshold of comfort.

When Will I See Results from Ultherapy®? How Long Do Ultherapy® Results Last?

While some patients may experience some initial changes in their skin following Ultherapy® treatment, the results will continue to improve over the course of two to three months. Final results will gradually appear within six months as the body continues to produce new collagen. Since the procedure uses your own collagen to rejuvenate the skin, how long the treatment lasts will ultimately depend on your individual anatomy. The natural aging process will continue and ultimately dictate how long the visible changes in your skin last following Ultherapy® treatment.

How Many Ultherapy® Treatments Will I Need?

One treatment session is enough to produce the desired outcome of most patients. However, depending on your degree of skin laxity, and how your body, specifically the collagen-building cells, responds to ultrasound energy, you may benefit from maintenance treatments. Your skin will continue to age as normal, but maintenance treatments can keep the natural aging process from overtaking the health and appearance of your skin.

Are There Any Side Effects from Ultherapy®?

Slight redness and a flushed appearance are normal for the first few hours following treatment. Mild swelling, tenderness, and tingling across the treatment site is also typical for some patients, but these side effects are temporary. Temporary bruising and numbness are post-treatment side effects that are less common but still seen in some patients. There is always the chance for rare, adverse side effects following any cosmetic medical treatment, and our doctor will go over these possibilities prior to your Ultherapy® procedure.

Is Ultherapy® Safe?

Ultherapy® received FDA approval after a series of successful clinical trials involving more than 350,000 patients from around the world. Medical professionals have used ultrasound energy for more than 50 years for a variety of medical applications. Additionally, every practitioner who offers Ultherapy® must complete a specialized and advanced training workshop with the manufacturers of the device prior to offering the therapy to patients.

How Much Does an Ultherapy® Procedure Cost in Boston?

Who is a Good Candidate for Ultherapy®?

The best candidates for Ultherapy® are people who show early signs of aging skin, particularly mild to moderate skin laxity. These early signs of maturing skin can range from sagging skin around the eyebrows and under the chin to lax skin on the neck as well as fine lines and wrinkles on the chest.
