Treating Male Pattern Baldness

Male Hair Loss

Some of Hollywood’s most famous actors rock the bald ‘do. While Vin Diesel and Dwayne
“The Rock” Johnson have made their lack of hair iconic, that doesn’t mean you have to too. While as much as 85% percent of men experience significant thinning in their lifetimes, many don’t know about all the hair correction options available to them. Below we explain male pattern baldness and offer solutions to restore your thick locks.

WHAT IS MALE PATTERN BALDNESS?

Male pattern baldness, or androgenic alopecia, is a condition characterized by hair loss at the crown of the head, thinning of hair on top of the head, or a recessed hairline. While it is true that male pattern baldness can be caused by genetic factors, hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Grooming habits
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Nervous responses
  • Infections
  • Certain medications

HOW TO TREAT MALE PATTERN BALDNESS

Non-surgical options to treat hair loss include medications such as Propecia® and Rogaine®. While these treatments are effective short term, they cannot target hair loss in specific areas, and continued use produces many negative side effects. Therefore, the recommended treatments for hair loss include hair restoration procedures that deliver natural-looking results and higher satisfaction with lower costs and surgical risk.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR HAIR RESTORATION?

The most important factor when considering a patient’s candidacy for hair restoration treatment is whether or not the patient has an adequate amount of healthy donor hair for extraction from the back or sides of the scalp. Without a sufficient amount of hair in donor sites, the procedure cannot be performed successfully. In addition, the quality of the patient’s hair plays a role in post-procedure satisfaction. Those with coarse and dark hair will see thicker results than those with fine or light-colored hair.

HAIR REPLACEMENT PROCESS

During hair replacement surgery, a local anesthetic is first administered to the treatment area. Next, a small strip of individual hairs and soft tissue is taken from the sides or back of the scalp. This strip is cut into smaller grafts containing groups of one to five donor hairs. Our hair restoration specialist will then make small incisions into target areas that are thinning and insert the graft into the incisions. Overall, the procedure can take anywhere from three to eight hours.
